Tilly Brauer, Head of Business Planning and Analysis
When we talk about impact in asset management, it’s easy to reach for the things we can measure: IRR, yield, capital deployed. But at IAA, there’s deep value in what we cultivate beyond the numbers, too.
Our CEO, Hugh Killen, recently wrote that regen ag is about people, not just land. It struck a chord with our readers, and it got me thinking more about the ‘S’ in ESG: social impact.
Not the kind you calculate a return on. The kind that shows up in every decision we make.
PURPOSE BEYOND THE METRICS
We’ve just wrapped up recruitment for a new analyst and through every interview, a strong theme emerged. Candidates weren’t just enthusiastic about ag – they wanted to be part of a business doing things differently.
That alignment is what drew me here, too, after more than a decade in corporate ag. What’s kept me here, five years later, is the way social impact lives in the business, interwoven into everything we do.
It’s not just about who we hire, but what they get to build once they’re here. We’ve seen environmental scientists become systems thinkers. Farmhands grow into asset managers. People build new roles that align with their skills and values.
This is a company where initiative is backed, where talent is grown, and where impact is measured not just in metrics, but purpose.
SHAPING THE FUTURE
It’s not just that we get to build a meaningful career in ag without owning land. What’s different here is the opportunity to move from just doing the work, to shaping how it’s done. Across our systems: tree and broadacre crops, livestock – we’re even exploring pongamia for biofuel – there’s room to think long-term, to try new ideas, and to build something better than business as usual.
That diversity opens up more entry points, more ways to contribute. To lead with values. To shape something meaningful. And as the business grows, so do the opportunities to make an impact.
But how can you truly measure that?
Because social impact doesn’t show up clearly on a spreadsheet. Some of the most meaningful things we do can’t be counted. It’s just simply part of who we are.
A business where the people who grow with us go on to shape the future of agriculture far beyond our fences.
